More than One Site on a Shared Server

Shared hosting is more flexible than most people believe. Site owners who have more than one domain and site oftentimes assume that their best option is to pay for a dedicated server given the larger bandwidth capabilities and the power of having an entire server dedicated to their needs. Even with multiple domains, this is often overkill.

Many shared hosting plans allow users to configure several domains and store all of them on their portion of the shared disc space. As long as those sites fit within the allotted data storage, this arrangement can be very cost effective. This allows site owners to maintain several different working sites from one account and to benefit from the user-friendly aspects of shared hosting.

Oftentimes, your site host will have an interface built into your account page that allows you to purchase domain names and to locate them on your server in a few steps. Once it’s set up, you’ll likely have to create users and set permissions for access to the new site’s file directory.

Depending on your host, you may see all of your site folders when you log in via FTP or you may have to log into each account individually. If the former is the case, each directory will generally be named with the domain name for which it stores files. In essence, this is the same as a dedicated server, minus the very technical aspects of setting up dedicated servers.
