Caution for Unethical Web Hosting Company

Whether a hosting company is ethical or not can be a very subjective topic. Ethics are something that can be personal or these can be universally acceptable. Though there is a very thin line between being ethical and unethical, you should look out for some clues to figure out your host company’s ethics.

Always sign a written agreement with your host for all terms and conditions. If your host insists on verbal commitment on certain points, it can be tricky. The agreement should include all important points such as hosting plan and payment schedule, promised bandwidth, disk space required, connection and download speeds, how frequently you can update the site, and additional charges if any, for these services.

There are many benefits of this agreement. One, the host can never roll back from the commitment because you have a valid written agreement. Two, you can always challenge it in a court in case of a dispute. Three, a relevant cancellation clause gives you an option to terminate the contract, if required.

If your host if at a distant location and you cannot visit the company personally, read its privacy policy and copyright statements carefully. In the absence of any guarantee in the form of such a policy, you should not trust the host because you can not claim the validity of what was promised, if it is not fulfilled. Ensure that the technical support team is capable of answering your basic and technical queries. If you sense that you are getting incomplete or incorrect information, there can be something wrong in the functioning of hosting company.

Do some research and analysis of customer or market feedback of company. Too many unsatisfied customers and low ratings of company mean that you should not trust the commitments or ethic standards of this company.
